Black sparkling cocktail dress,
Gucci dress purse swinging from your shoulder,
heels long and sharp enough
to grab hold like a piton,
haul your swaying body to the next step –
is this really you?
Four hours ago,
you were on your hands and knees,
scouring between the bathroom tiles,
brow sweating,
hair drooping in soapy water,
and your lips as kissable
as a drain pipe.
The transformation amazes me.
I must accept the fact
that you are two women in one –
alluring and practical,
sexy and human.
And each is not
a substitute for its other self
but a conviction that
all of you is ever-present
even if I can’t see it.
It is good of you
to go out on the town with me
and to keep the house I live in
spotlessly clean.
Good of you,
just not all of you.
