Questioning Visitation Rites

Father, are we going far?
You’re hurriedly hustling us
into your car, angrily puffing
a Churchill cigar.
Will there be the same
as wherever we are?

Father, please, spout out the truth:
Must we bask like lizards
in a mobile phone booth, sunning
and napping while you glare
and stomp gas, not getting
wherever we’re going fast?

Roaring after earthly delights
—dipped Dairy Queen noons,
boxed barbeque nights—
will you fume anew how
you grew up bad but strained
and changed to a normal Dad?

Aren’t the odds all best
we sputter home two full
hours late, school work tanked,
bloated and amnesiac, while Mom
profanes the blue smoke haze
and you spin off for thirty days?
