Sea Glass

Fragment of green glass,
glowing now like jade,
frosted by grinding waves
in shifting sands ashore.

In and out of consciousness,
you survived the crashing
car that mangled your bike
and split your skull.

No contour remains
to reveal your shape
or intended function
before the shattering.

Contused and bruised,
tumbled on tarmac,
scraped and bleeding,
your body mended.

Broken pieces along
coastal beaches mingle
with shell and grains
of varicolored sand.

Your beautiful mind,
scars well hidden,
never fully restored
to original condition.

Trash or treasure,
found and collected,
simply tossed away, or
on a mantle, displayed.

Chipped, cracked
shards of your selves,
tenuously grip this life,
rejected, and cherished.
