A Love of Shattered Things

The immemorial appeal of history,

Of half-forgotten memories, of ruins,

Runs into opposition from the future;

That smooth and undisturbed continuum

Where we raise children and the nation, till

They grow, and grow rebellious, and show

The faults of father and of founders, then

Fragment into broken family, country.

The porcelain of the past, now shattered past

Union, invites the fingers and the heart;

Only the mind suspends all disbelief

Knowing the fate of shattered things is to seek

Higher assimilation, the salvation

Of child in nation, and of nation, history.
